Snorkeling Hanauma Bay Oahu

Hi friends,

Happy Travel Tuesday! Hope you’re having an awesome day, no matter where you are in the world. We’re dreaming of the day we went snorkeling at Hanauma Bay Oahu – one of the most renowned and beautiful sites on Hawaii’s busiest island.

This gorgeous nature preserve is just a half-hour drive from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki. You can arrange a tour from most of the local hotels, but you can also take a taxi or even the county/city bus if you’re looking for a more budget friendly option. We jumped in a taxi and were thrilled when we arrived to see this unbelievably blue water…anyone else want to dive right in???

Up until this excursion, I’d been cooped up in our Waikiki hotel with a horrible cold, so you can imagine how excited I was to get out of the city and explore some of the island’s more picturesque offerings. There’s no way a cold was going to keep us from relaxing on a beach like this…

The beach might look a little crowded, but it really felt like we had the water to ourselves. Hanauma Bay is a an expansive volcanic crater rich with plenty of tropical fish for everyone to see (and, if you’re lucky like us, you might even spot a sea turtle or two). Hanauma Bay is fairly shallow and calm and the beach is staffed by lifeguards, so it’s a great spot for snorkelers of all ages and abilities to get a taste of Hawaii’s tropical waters.

For only $7.50 per person, this excursion was an incredible day and one of our favorite activities on the island. Our die-hard snorkeling friends who also like a little more adventure might also want to check out Sharks Cove (more on that coming soon!) on Oahu’s North Shore.

We definitely went home happy and continue to be amazed by Hawaii’s natural beauty! Have you ever been to Oahu? What’s your favorite spot on the island?

Tell us in the comments below – we love to hear from you!

    • Hey Derek – Glad to hear it’s been preserved so well over the past ten years since you were there! 🙂 Truly a gorgeous place, and we hope it stays that way for years to come so others can experience it too!
